Tell us a little more about you and your store. I am a graphic designer and in my job I create eye catching graphics and packaging for products. I have always been attracted to the abstract and the bold. My work tends to be contemporary but I love rich colors that make strong statements. As an artist, I have played with many different mediums, including sculpture, and jewelry was a natural extension of my desire to work with three dimensions in my art. I have been designing for over 10 years but only just started selling.
What is your design process? Do you start with the materials or a drawing? Usually the piece starts in my head. If i have too many ideas roaming around there, I will jot down the idea, but usually they stay in my head and build. Of course, what is in your head turns out different once you start working iwth the materials. I carefully work on picking out my beads and metal and layout of the design takes way longer than actually "making" the piece.
What have been some of your favorite jewelry pieces you've created and why? My favorite pieces are those that match what I had in my head the best. I have a series of "Megan"s on my etsy site that are large and random and I think reflect my artistic vision. But some of my simpler pieces, like the "Ocean" and "Summer Sun" look really great on the neck and wear well.
What other projects are you working on this fall? I am getting more into metal work. I want large abstract metal shapes to wear as pendants. I also want to make my own large metal beads.
Tell us what inspires you? I am often inspired by what I see on the street or on a show. Strong colors with some interesting fashion statement, whether jewelry or not. I look at a lot of haute couture and take parts of it that may work for me.
Any blog or shops you like to share? Other etsy sellers that I think do beautiful work, albeit very different from mine, include aimeegolant.etsy.com, who I personally know and know what goes into each and every one of her pieces. Also, additionsstyle.etsy.com , who takes the mundane and makes it interesting.
